A career in Palm Reading:

Palm reader Beth Davis describes 4 key-aspects to acquire a career in the field of modern Palm Reading (Hand Analysis).

I'm going to keep today's article brief. If you're like me, your time is precious and you want your information to be both useful and easily digestible. I'll aim for both. Yes, you probably guessed it. I'm the Ivy League grad who reads palms. (I decided to write this article in response to the various and curious reactions I've received based upon that single bit of info.)

Sure, I got a great education, no doubt. But that education was not required or necessary for doing what I love to do. Why even mention "Ivy League" grad? Who cares? Well, some people thinks it "means" something. Others could give a hoot. I'd like to share with you what I've come to think it means. So here are some success myths I'd like to shatter (and some success strategies learned):

1. GO TO COLLEGE, GET A GREAT JOB

This is a common myth. If you get an advanced degree, it is statistically proven to up your earning potential. However, it is not indicator whatsoever of your ability to choose a profession that you enjoy. At my 10-year college reunion, many people said to me, "Wow. You have the most interesting profession. And you seem so happy." A lot of my college classmates - now doctors, lawyers, investment bankers - admitted to having more money but little time to enjoy life. Many of them had also put on a lot of weight and had big circles under their eyes. Sounds like fun to me - NOT!!!
Success Strategy: Spend time searching for what you love. It WILL come if you're patient. I could have left college and stepped immediately into a high-paying, high-stress job. Instead, I worked odd jobs until I found hand analysis. When I encountered palmistry, I said this is it! It took me 12 years. And boy! Did people give me crap along the way. They'd say, "When are you going to DO something with your life? Especially with your education!!!" I said, "When I find it." I was busy finding out who I wanted to BE.

2. IMPRESSIVE CREDENTIALS ENSURE SUCCESS

Only among those people who recognize the credential. My college degree seems to impress two groups of people: other Ivy League grads and people who are insecure about their own level of intelligence! Everyone else could give a hoot. As a hand analyst, no one has ever asked me where I went to college! (Of course, my palmistry degree is only meaningful to other palmists! I studied palmistry because I WANTED to.) Success Strategy: Get the credentials YOU NEED to do what you love. If you don't need the credentials, why waste time and money on school? Go for it!

3. YOU NEED TO FINISH WHAT YOU START

Steve Jobs, creator of the Apple computer, dropped out of college officially and then unofficially audited all the classes he wanted to take, absorbing the info as his own rate, then moving onto to the next class. Success Strategy: Follow your bliss. Consistency is highly over-rated. Finishing is only important if you're finishing what you value.

4. IMPRESSING PEOPLE IS IMPORTANT

It's a human need to be acknowledged for our accomplishments. Your neighbor has a green lawn and you hear all the compliments he gets. Maybe you've even complimented him yourself - so you strive to make your lawn greener. Your best friend is thinner than you are, so you start starving yourself. If you look at your life, I bet there is one area where you want to impress people.
Success is defined by one thing: YOU. Your credentials or lack thereof do NOT define your success: YOU DO! What your mom or dad told you, what your teachers told you, what your church told you, etc. - none of these sources can determine your success.

Here's to your success!
Go for it!
What are you waiting for?

Islamabad, Pakistan - The Palmprint of Benazir Bhutto was taken after a University debate at Oxford and was the subject of much later Astrological analysis and debate in India and Pakistan. Palmist T. Stokes from the UK prints his hand analysis of Benazir Bhutto's hands.

The line colliding with the life line at age 54 tells of an assault on the life energies at that time, and the line after that point is weak. Some palmists claim you cannot see the future as the lines change, and some lines do actually change but in the second character only, the lines are indelibly printed on the hand from the first few weeks in the womb. This is a simplified palmascope for easy digestion, a full analysis is available, using Hindu, Muslim and Tibetan techniques, with western analysis.

Hindu Palm Reading:

Hindus began the art of Palm Reading, is said. More about modern Hindu Palm Reading.

Hindus began the art of Palm Reading, or so it is said. Since Hindus have been studying Palm Reading longer than Westerners, one would think there would be more books written on the topic. But actually, since Hindu Palm Reading was largely an oral tradition, passed down from generation to generation as so many folk traditions are. The topic is mentioned in other texts, but never becomes the subject of one itself.

Nonetheless, I was reading palms at Bread and Puppet, an outdoor theater festival in Vermont, many years ago. It was there that someone suggested that Benares, India would be a good place to study the art. It took me many years, but in 2004 I finally went. I showed up in this holy city on the Ganges (also called Varanasi), and found a palm reader to instruct me behind the Golden Temple of Annapurna.

One of the differences noted in common books about Hindu Palm Reading is the poetic terminology referring to basic markings. According to Western Palm Reading literature, such terms include the “Arrow of Vishnu,” the “Broken Tusk of Ganesha,” the “Chain of Kali,” and the “Mark of the Brahman,” all indicating of the many aspects of the cow.

Vishnu, Ganesha, and Kali are all Hindu deities, so it makes sense that marks, much like a Rorschach test, would be named for Hindu gods and goddesses. And since the cow is holy to Hindis, having a cow mark on the hand is considered evidence of high karma. For example, a Hindi palm reader might indicate that a strong rising line on the third phalange of Jupiter on a full, plump hand indicates a man who has many cows, or strong karma.

Actually, the Hindi Palm Reader I went to gave me a palm reading for which I was not really prepared. We sat cross-legged across from each other on pillows, drinking chai tea behind a used bookstore. He examined my hand slowly and wrote things down on a piece of paper, which he had folded into segments. He marked aspects of my astrological chart, which he determined by my hands and my birthdate, not according to the books about Palm Reading that were written in the West.

He gave predictions as to where I might live, what I might excel in, and my attitude towards romance. He ended up offering to make me an amulet, which his guru would bless in order to bring me luck in the resolution of an issue in the coming year. He brought the amulet down to my hotel before I left the next day. His approach was mesmerizing and he didn’t even utilize foreign markers. He invited me to sell his father’s art collection for him in the States, and said I would go far and become well known through my spiritual and religious writings.

So far so good. I am about to go back to see him, and a few other sites in Varanasi, such as goddess temples. As I type this, I am packing to leave. I am taking Xeroxes of my daughter’s palms, and I can’t wait to hear what he has to say.

If you want to come on my next organized tour to see him, send me an email. I met someone when I was recently reading palms in Palenque that had gone to see him as well, so I assume he must be fairly famous. I know he is good. Tell him I said so if you make it there on your own.

The most common 'Palm Reading' synonyms in India are: 'Palmistry', 'Hand Reading' (English is the 'second language' in India) + Jyotish (Sanskrit).

One of the most important stories in the history of Palm Reading is the Hindu sage which says that Valmiki wrote a book, whose title translates in English as "The Teachings of Valmiki Maharshi on Male Palm Reading", comprising 567 stanzas, more than 5,000 years ago. And you should also know that Palm Reading can trace its roots back to Indian (Hindu) Astrology and Roma (gypsy) fortune tellers.

William G. Benham writes in ‘The Benham Book of Palmistry’ (1900):

(p. 520): “In some hands there are none of these lines and in others many are seen. From time immemorial they have been used by older palmists as indications of marriage or unions of the sexes. Their value in practice is considerable if used up to their limit, and in combination, but used by themselves, as a hard-and-fast indication of marriage, they lead to contstant error.”

David Brandon-Jones writes in ‘Practical Palmistry’ (1986):

(p.241): “They are also known as lines of Marriage or Affection and are connected with the individual”s capacity for giving and receiving affection. A relationship line may or may not refer to husband, wife or lover. To my certain knowledge, it has, in at least one case, indicated a lonely lady’s fondness for a beloved pet. It is not possible, as I know to my cost, to rely on these lines alone as predicting marriage or the start of a long-term relationship.”

Nathaniel Altman, writes in ‘Sexual Palmistry’ (1986):

(p.120): “Unfortunately there is no certain sign of age on a union line, as it length can also reveal the lingering impact of a relationship on the person even after it is ‘officially’ over. Again, the intuition can be usefull here. Major issues involving incompatibility, personality conflicts, lack of commitment and infidelity are often reflected in islands or breaks. Whenever you study a union line, remember that it is subject to change.”

What is Palm Reading?

The art of Palm Reading has been popular for ages. It is believed that fortune telling is more than telling people what they want to hear. Some view palm reading as a science. Palmistry is an art and therefore not everybody who claims to be a palm reader knows his stuff.

Palm Reading is too difficult an art and therefore not everybody who claims to be a Palm Reader knows his stuff. Roadside Palm Readers take advantage of people's helplessness and tensions by giving them tidings of a bright future. Most of the Palm Readers who advertise in newspapers appear on television are fakes. The craze to knowing the future from soothsayers is rapidly increasing youngsters who are always keen to know about their future. They show their hands to anybody who claims that he or she knows Palmistry.

Students visit Palm Readers to know about the awaited result and girls about their marriage and marital life. But in the modern times no-one is sure whether the Palm Reader is a fake or knows what is what. One can find Palm Readers in every street and 90 percent out of them know nothing. Some sit by the roadside while other have opened their offices and they advertise in newspapers and have their visiting cards printed.

So popular is Palm Reading among the youth that Palm Reading stalls are a regular feature at functions in colleges. Mazher Abbas, a university student, told The Post that whenever any function is organised they book a stall for fortunetellers to attract more and more youngsters.

When The Post talked to a roadside Palm Reading in Raja Bazaar he said mostly uneducated people came to him to show their hands and they want to hear good things.

"Almost every time I tell everyone the same things and they believe in me.
'Mr. Palmist, the length of the life line ... what does it mean?'

The classic 'life line' is one of the most well-known features of Palmistry. Most people are able to find the life line in their own hands.

Some guidelines from the international Palmistry literature about the life line:

William G. Benham writes in 'The Benham Book of Palmistry' (1900):

(p. 467): "The line of Life indicates the health of the subject during the various periods of life, his physical strength in general, and whether he lives during each period on his nervous force or relies upon muscular robustness. By reason of these facts, it records many detailed events in his life, and forms a basis to fall back upon when seeking confirmations and explanations of indications found elsewhere in the hand."

Edward D. Campbell writes in 'The Encyclopedia of Palmistry' (1996):

(p.133): "To the Indian palmists, this line reflects the strength of the family tree. Long, clear, and well-marked life lines are indicative of strength, vitality, good immune systems, good recovery ability, resilience, and sexual energy, especially if they describe a generous curve around a healthy mount of Venus."

Arnold Holtzman, Ph.D. writes in 'Psychodiagnostic Chirology in Analysis and Therapy' (2004):

(p.116): "The tenar line: ego drive discipline. This line is identified almost universally as the line of life. And while tradition and folklore have their place in any culture this very unfortunate labeling has contributed to countless tragedies over the years. Books have been published in which the assertion was made that the length of this line is an indicator of the length of the person's life, and many a death can be attributed to a palmist's stated certainty that the subject would not life beyond a given year. It is imperative, then, to establish at the start that there is no link whatsoever between this line and the length of one's life."

'Mrs. Palm Reader, which hand do you read?'

Which hand does the palm reader read? History shows that the answer might depend on the culture where Palm Reading is being used.

Some recommendations from the international Palm Reading literature:

William G. Benham writes in 'The Benham Book of Palmistry' (1900):

(p. 31): "In all examinations you should consult both hands, and should never attempt specific statements, unless they are based upon a thorough knowledge of the information which can be gleaned only from the hands considered seperately, and then together. Many failures are recorded in palm readings when one hand only has been used, due to the fact that men change as they grow older, and these changes are recorded in the right hand."

Edward D. Campbell writes in 'The Encyclopedia of Palmistry' (1996):

(p.20): "I no longer follow any traditional method of looking at the right and left hand. I believe that those Eastern methods that look only to the right hand for male clients and the left hand for females are totally inadequate and sexist, and often are value-based against the left hand. This bias against the left hand has crept into Western Palmistry just as the latin word for left, sinister, has coloured our thoughts concerning left-handed persons as conniving, bad people."

Arnold Holtzman, Ph.D. writes in 'Psychodiagnostic Chirology in Analysis and Therapy' (2004):

(p.63): "As for the hands themselves, no two are exactly alike - not even when they belong to the same person. The question that arises must be: if each hand is unique, delivering a 'story' which must, in some way, be different from every other 'story', which hand and which 'story' is the most representative of the individual? Which may we assume to be the truest mirror of his, or her, immediate circumstances? The answer is both - equally. Each hand may put forward its own account of the man it speaks of, and each would be entirely relevant."

Palm Reading is an art of hand study:

Palm Reading is a personalised method of self-discovery on how your hand reflects your life. It used to be an art in the ancient times but has now transformed into a science.

Ancient Palm Reading is not founded on solid ground. It was often conditioned by hit-and-miss methods and overlaid with dogmas of superstitions, guesswork and observations. In the 20th century, palm reading caught the attention of the scientific world. People began to do practical tests and statistical investigations on palm reading.

Palm Reading is now more systematic, cohesive, refined and more acceptable. Anyone can learn palm reading. It is very simple to learn the basics but it’s hard to understand it.

Palm Reading is one of the most difficult subjects to master. Most practitioners combine other methods to make their reading more comprehensive.

Tarot card reading is the art of reading symbols and images from picture cards. Tarot cards tap into the person’s consciousness. It tells of the person’s past, present and future. It originates from Egypt but has its early influence from Europe as early as the 14th century. Not everyone can master tarot card reading. Psychic ability lies dormant in everyone until it is further cultivated. With practice, you shape your senses.
